INUIT [ 2020 ]
Recordings with Inuits from the territory of Nunavut, Canada: Inuit throat singing is a unique singing style worldwide. PROJECT 909 [ 2009 ]
Modified Drum Machine, Sufi Songs, Jazz Improvisations

I have modulated the sounds of the cult drum machine TR-909 into subtle, noisy sounds and combined them with specially programmed sequences. These soundtracks formed the atmospheric basis for a concert at the Mainz Jazz Festival in 2009, with four musicians improvising over the tracks. You hear stray sounds that briefly sit down at the cocktail bar to have a drink – Arabic Sufi chants, jazz improvisations, background and background noises, borrowings from pop, new music, film music, minimal music – some of it sounds familiar, some idiosyncratic, strange.

Mohamed Badawi: Sufi vocals, oud, percussion
Jens-Peter Volk: bass, electronics
Chris Zimmer: sax, flute

TANNENGRIESEL KOLLEKTIV [ 2008 ]
Duo with Ulrich Rützel

Ulrich never rehearses with his fellow musicians, he only improvises. The former jazz pianist is best known as the co-founder of the international media festival “ARS ELECTRONICA” in Linz, as well as the former head and artistic director of the labels “ERDENKLANG” and “CCn’C Records”. Before that, he was responsible for artists such as Peter Gabriel, Barry White, Toto Blanke, Jasper van’t Hof and Chris Hinze for Phonogram. Ulrich Rützel is now a consultant for music and media projects and accompanies dying people with art and music.

Concerts and productions with Alvaro Peña-Rojas and Jens Peter Volk

Singer and songwriter Álvaro Peña-Rojas (The Chilean with the singing nose) had to flee Chile in 1974 after the Pinochet coup. In London, he met Joe Strummer (THE CLASH) and founded The 101’ers with him, which for many was the first punk band, even before the Sexpistols. I played drums with Álvaro at numerous live concerts, accompanied by Jens-Peter Volk on bass.

LA BATAILLE d’ARMUNIUS [ 1994 ]
Technical direction for an 8-channel composition by Ferdinand Richard for La bataille d’Arminius by Heinrich von Kleist at the Théâtre Nanterre-Amandiers, Paris.

Director: Jean Jourd’heuil
Music: Ferdinand Richard

In 1993, Ferdinand Richard (bass) released a concept album entitled “Arminius” together with Takumi Fukushima (violin), Helmut Bieler-Wendt (violin) and Vladimír Václavek (bass). In 1995, this music was reworked for the theater play La bataille d’Arminius. Ferdinand’s compositions were created in a multi-channel sound system and mixed over 8 independent channels. At the Théâtre Nanterre-Amandiers in Paris, they were played through a specially designed sound system with 8 loudspeakers distributed throughout the theater. In the recording studio, we used a specially developed Pro Tools system with 8 channels, which was unique in 1994. Thanks to the 8 speakers, we were able to create an impressive three-dimensional sound experience in which the instruments could be heard from the front, back, left and right or moving through the room. I was responsible for the operation of the technical monster and the mixes.

EMBRYO [ 1985 / 1987 ]
CD productions for the band Embryo

For over 50 years, “Embryo” has been one of the most interesting and versatile bands in Europe. Since their formation in 1969, they have toured the world and played with artists such as Fela Kuti, Ravi Shankar, Trilok Gurtu, Charlie Mariano and Mal Waldron. In 1970, the band performed at the Fehmarn Festival directly after Jimi Hendrix and founded their own music label with “Ton Steine Scherben” and Rio Reiser. “Embryo” are the pioneers of world music. After the death of band leader Christian Burchard in 2018, his daughter Marja takes over the management of the group. I enjoyed working with the Embryo musicians often over many years – especially with Roman Bunka and Christian Burchard (on several CD productions, the Snowball Opera, various events, etc.), but also with Edgar Hofmann, Werner Aldinger and others. The collaboration was always something special for me, it was enriching, inspiring and fun.

DIE WAND AN [ 1983 – 1985 ]
Live Project – Sound / Impro-Dance / Action Painting

The wacky experimental duo “Scheiß die Wand an” was founded in the early 1980s by Freddy Setz (drums, tapes) and Gerald Luciano Hartwig (bass, tapes). The ex-Embryo musicians also play in Roman Bunka’s short-lived band “Dein Kopf ist ein schlafendes Auto”. In 1982, their only album “Scheiß die Wand an – Name : Ø Titel : Ø” is released by Trikont under the motto “Rock gegen Musik”. Later, Stephan Rustige (painting) and Jutta Keller (dance) join the duo. When Freddy and Gerald left in 1983, Fred Braceful, a US jazz drummer who played in Wolfgang Dauner’s legendary group Et Cetera, and tuba player Klaus Burger took over. The project is renamed “Die Wand an”. Shortly afterwards, Fred also leaves the group for health reasons. Stephan Rustige invites Rupert Volz (vocals, trumpet, guitar) and me (drums, tapes) to take part in the irreconcilable live action performances.

“Die Wand an” records sounds on cassettes and uses cassette recorders as samplers, which were unaffordable at the time. Despite changing line-ups, the project remains full of strange sounds – mysterious, archaic, dark. Avant Noise, Impro, Free, Experimental. Recorded tapes, onomatopoeia – sung, spoken, chopped up – noises, field recordings – scraps of tuba, rhythm and vocals. Dance – large canvases – action painting. Stephan captures musical impulses and movements, creating a constantly changing painting from them – expressively abstract… It is said to have been Marianne Sägebrecht’s favorite band!

LOGIC ANIMAL [ 1985 ]
Studio recordings with Edgar Hofmann and Roman Bunka

Logic Animal was a duo formed by Embryo members Roman Bunka and Edgar Hofmann in the mid-1980s. Their “demo cassette” is an audio treat with four untitled tracks that were never released. Edgar and Roman experimented with an analog drum machine and a sampler – hence the title “Logic Animal or the machine lives”. The wonderful songs are unique and very intense in a somewhat unwieldy way. I recorded and mixed the tracks in my recording studio in Glashütte. It’s a real shame that Logic Animal didn’t exist for long, I really liked them.

PETER FROHMADER / HUBL GREINER [ 1985 ]
Studio album with the “Godfather of Gothic”, Peter Frohmader (composer, musician and artist), who sadly passed away on May 2, 2022.

Peter is also known by the name of his band “Nekropolis”. He became known for his nightmarish gothic compositions and became an important figure in the European progressive electronic music scene. As well as the “Godfather of Gothic”, he was also known as the “Lord of Dark Sounds” or the creator of “German Angst Music”. Famous bands such as Sisters of Mercy, Throbbing Gristle and Lacrimosa have referred to him. Frohmader studied art and was friends with the artist and inventor of the Alien Monsters, H.R. Giger.

For the album, we first improvised eight tracks live in the studio in Glashütte and then recorded several overdubs with a DX7, a Chapman Stick, percussion, vocals and saxophone. Incidentally, the saxophone is played by the wonderful Ulrike Schimpf. Unfortunately, the album was never released – although some of the tracks would have been predestined for David Lynch’s TV series Twin Peaks.

Peter Frohmader: Bass, DX7, Chapman Stick
Hubl Greiner: Drums, Percussion, Vocals
Ulrike Schimpf: Saxophone
